The art of belly dancing originated in the mid-east and each part of a costume has a role in telling the story associated with the dance. It may only be to accentuate a motion or make a noise, and the belly dancing coin belt is one the items which is used to decorate a costume.

In the United States, there are three basic forms of the belly dance with the American Restaurant Belly Dance being the most popular. The other forms are the U.S. Tribal and Egyptian Oriental. While costumes, including the belly dancing coin belt, available for purchase from various suppliers the use of a belly dancing coin belt is a personal choice of the dancers.

A typical belly dance costume consists of the basics of a bra, a belt and a skirt and the type of dance performed will determine the style and colors. Egyptian oriental belly dancing costumes, for example, is usually more subdued and most likely not include a belly dancing coin belt due to its glittery nature. Whereas, a person performing an American restaurant style may choose a belly dancing coin belt to accentuate the hip movements of the dance.

Coins not for Monetary use

Many times when people think of the terms coin belt and belly dancing they perceive a belt in which to place coins. A belly dancing coin belt is a belt made of hundreds of coins specifically made for use in belly dancing. They may have different colors and designs and are usually available in three essential shapes. The triangular belly dancing coin belt resembles a triangular shape when lying flat, and when worn, one side hangs lower on the dancer’s hips than the other two.

A circular belly dancing coin belt is the same width all the way around and tends to frame the dancer’s hips and a scalloped belly dancing coin belt will vary in width in a consistent pattern. There may be other variations of these designs, but they the basic starting point. Individual dancers may choose to purchase a coin belt and then make modifications to match their individual preference.

The use of a belly dancing coin belt in American restaurant dances or American tribal is not essential, but the use of a belt does more than hold a skirt in place. As the dance is performed, the belt tends to draw attention to the hip movements, which are part of the dance. During an opening dance, usually a fast-paced performance during which the dancer is saying hello to the audience, a belly dancing coin belt shimmers under the lights with the movements.
